Denis Flores, Psychologist
Denis Flores was born in Malta in 1946 and arrived in Australia aboard the SS Columbia in Dec 1949. He has a long and distinguished history in Psychology in Australia and Malta.
He obtained a Bachelor of Arts (UNSW 1969) in Psychology and Political Science and Bachelor of Letters (Post Graduate) (UNE 1978) in Organisational Psychology.
He was elected Fellow, Australian Psychological Society in 2005, was Chair of the College of Organisational Psychologists from 2003 to 2006 and became founding Managing Editor of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Organisational Psychology in 2007.
He also gained appointment as Adjunct Clinical Associate in the Centre for Neuropsychology at Swinburne University, 2003-2006 and Honorary Fellow, Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, Deakin University, 2005-2010.
Always with an interest in the next generation of psychologists, Denis established the Institute of Psychological Practice in 2003 providing curriculum and supervision for psychology graduate interns. IPP provided professional development leading to a Diploma of Psychological Practice and high level practice learning for psychologists already registered. He was Principal and Chair of the Board of Governors of the Institute from 2004 to 2007.
As well as research and practice Denis has been an active contributor to International Conferences. He was an invited Keynote Speaker at the 44th International Applied Military Psychology Conference in St Petersburg, Russia in 2008 on the topic “Testing for Situational Awareness in Military Personnel” and the following year spoke at the 45th Conference in Riga, Latvia on “Resilience: Enhancing Military Performance and Safety”. He was then Convenor of the 46th International Applied Military Psychology Symposium in Malta, in Sep 2010, “The Changing Face of Leadership: Maximising performance and well being at all levels.”
Denis holds a Psychologist Warrant from the Malta Psychologists Registration Board, 2015 (MPPB 137)
After 20 years as an Army psychologist and subsequent work for two of the big six consulting firms, Ernst and Young and Deloitte, Denis Flores founded his own firm, Career Focus Pty Ltd in 1993, The company operated for a further 19 years and specialised in psychological services, maximising the potential of individuals and organisations. The core services were:
Career Focus worked in all industry sectors but in particular in transport, finance, business services, local government, construction and mining. It built particular expertise in selection and assessment in rail transport and developed a comprehensive competency database for this industry. From 2003 to 2011 the company focused on psychometric assessment in support of large scale recruitment campaigns. It developed a sophisticated online assessment system leading to a comprehensive assessment centre process.
Following the sale of Career Focus in 2013, Denis returned to Europe and continues his interest in research and Resilience in particular.
